The Charter, which was first published in 1998, recommends fuel specifications for four categories of vehicle technologies, emissions standards and markets around the world. The Committee continually updates the Charter to reflect new information. This Fourth Edition realigns the category definitions to more accurately reflect market conditions and vehicle requirements. It also updates and expands the listed test methods and technical background.
The Fourth Edition’s key message is that engine and vehicle technologies normally achieve improved performance and lower emissions with higher category fuels.
