Road accident investigation is a reactive approach to improving road safety with a high potential to identify and implement tailor-made safety measures. These guidelines describe the considerations and procedures behind road accident investigation, namely: importance of accident data and description of categories of data required, description of 10 types of accidents and vehicle movement codes, fundamentals for creating collision diagrams, evaluation of collision diagrams for safety improvements. Detailed examples of network safety management through accident investigation are given in annex.
