This design note is an outcome of the Cost and Safety Efficient Design for Rural Highways in Developing Countries Project. The project aims to identify safe and cost-effective engineering designs. This note provides technical information on the engineering of a road that is safe for pedestrians to walk alongside it, and is accompanied by photographs and diagrams. The following design topics are addressed: shoulders as footpaths; diversion roads as footpaths; segregated footpaths; cycle lanes and cycle paths; and motor cycle lanes. The note also includes a case study from Nepal.
