The manual on sustainable safe road design was elaborated as a training tool for ensuring safer traffic conditions in CEE countries through disseminating best practices and developing standards for the design of safer roads. It focuses on interurban roads, describing important technical aspects of the cross section, junction, alignment, linear villages and pedestrian crossings to achieve overall safe road design. Particular attention is paid to the implementation of cost effective, low-budget measures to upgrade the existing road infrastructure, which yield immediate and significant road safety gains. Seven case studies in partner countries are illustrated. It further provides guidelines to blackspot analysis as well as cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis.
