Road Safety Audit and Safety Impact Assessment

This review by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) describes the use of road safety audits and safety impact assessment in helping to design and build safe road and traffic schemes. Both procedures enable the skills of road safety engineering and accident analysis to be used for the prevention of accidents on new or modified roads, in many cases in the form of low-cost measures. The review explains how the procedures should be carried out and gives an overview of their cost-effectiveness. A case study explaining implementation of a safety audit in a British example and a safety impact assessment in a Dutch example are given in annex to the review.
