Mobility as a Driver for Economic Development: China Case Study

The Shanghai case study, prepared by the Department of Urban Planning at Tongji University, assesses the mobility challenges and opportunities with regard to the Greater Yangtze Delta Region (YDR) and Shanghai, the “dragon head” of economic development in China. The area has the highest population density, the largest gross domestic product and the most powerful development potential of all Chinese economic zones.
The YDR and Shanghai were selected for the Chinese case study as they have achieved rapid economic development enabled by huge investments in transport infrastructure. However, the challenge remains as to how to meet the future demands for mobility in a sustainable way.
