Over the years demand for traffic and speed has increased in pavement sector. To meet these needs it is preferable to adopt advanced engineering materials over conventional materials because of their ability to take impacts, settlements and deformations in a better way.Apart from technical advantages, these solutions shall have number of commercial and operational advantages like, speed and ease of construction, less maintenance, easy rectification etc. These types of solution perform in a balanced way with ecosystem and blend with environment, thereby inherently increase the life of structure towards sustainability. The sustainable road transport system includes pavements with a life cycleof more than designed life, which are disaster resistant, without major degradationand loss of functionality and with a low environmental impact.
Introducing geosynthetics in pavements is one among the advanced engineering materials to achieve sustainability. Different types of geosynthetics which are used in pavements are Geotextiles, Geogrids, Genets, Geomembrane and Geocompositeetc. and they perform one or more functions.
This paper briefly mentions about sustainable benefits of geosynthetics over conventional solutions, functions and applications of geosynthetic in pavements, comparison of conventional and geosynthetic solutions.
