This design note is an outcome of the Cost and Safety Efficient Design for Rural Highways in Developing Countries Project. The project aims to identify safe and cost-effective engineering designs. This note provides technical information for the planning of road-side structures and development, and is accompanied by photographs and diagrams. The following topics are addressed: selling produce; informal markets; formal market/rest areas; ribbon development; linear villages; traffic calming. The notes also includes a case study from Fiji.
