Bus Rapid Transit: Planning Guide

This Planning Guide first provides an overview of the BRT concept, including its definition and historical development. The Planning Guide then proceeds to give a step-by-step description of the BRT planning process. The Planning Guide encompasses six major components in BRT planning: I. Project preparation; II. Operational design; III. Physical design; IV. Integration; V. Business plan; and VI. Evaluation and implementation. In total, there are 20 different chapters covering a comprehensive set of planning issues including communications, demand analysis, operational planning, customer service, infrastructure, modal integration, vehicle and fare collection technology, institutional structures, costing, financing, marketing, evaluation, contracting, and construction planning. Finally, this publication also lists a range of information sources that can assist a city’s BRT planning efforts.
